Wilkinson 1835

エジプト学でウィルキンソンと言えば、19世紀の大旅行家であったと同時に記録魔でもあったこのウィルキンソン卿がまず挙げられるべきですが、もうほとんど引用されなくなってきたおかげで、日本では忘れ去られているようにも見受けられます。
しかしイギリスではエジプト学のパイオニアに該当し、19世紀におけるテーベの姿を知ろうと思った際には、必ず言及される巨人。日本で言うと、建築史学と考古学の双方のパイオニアであった伊東忠太に匹敵します。
初めの代表作は、"Topography of Thebes, and General View of Egypt"ですけれども、本当はこの本に、とてつもなく長い副題がつけられており、

と、もう際限がありません。「グーグル・スカラー」によってある程度、1835年の初版を見ることができるのが便利です。
上記では直してありますが、原書では著者名が、"I. G. Wilkinson"と印刷されている点に注意。ピラミドグラフィアの、"John Greaves"の場合もそうでした。
また、副題に"Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians"という記述がすでに見えることも面白い。
というのは、この人は数年後に内容を書き改めて、もっと記録を充実させた

を執筆しているからで、これが名高い"The Manner and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians"の初版です。
6巻もあり、驚異の書。しかしウィルキンソンの死後、数年経ってからサミュエル・バーチが3巻からなる改訂版を編纂しました。

などがあり、近年のリプリントも盛んで、専門家もわけが分からなくなっている状態。
古代エジプト人の生活を広く紹介した本としては、A. エルマンの著作とともに、重要な書籍です。
引用する際には、書誌を注意深く確認することが必要。
