El Gabry 2014

早稲田大学の河合望さんから教えていただいた本。
ジョンズ・ホプキンズ大学に提出された博士論文をもとにして出版された書です。著者は現在、ヘルワン大学の准教授。
BARのシリーズについては以前、Lander 1984や、BAR (Breasted, Ancient Records) 1906-1907などで触れました。今年、BARは40周年記念とのことです。膨大な数の本が出版されています。

カイロのエジプト博物館にどのような家具が所蔵されているのかが初めて明らかとなっており、非常に興味深い内容となっています。

"Of the chairs and stools he (=Geoffrey Killen) discusses, those preserved in the Cairo Museum belong to the royal sphere, mainly Hetepheres (Dynasty 4) and Tutankhamun (Dynasty 18), and are not included in this book."

と序章で述べている通り、ツタンカーメン（Tutankhamun）の家具については何も述べていません。
でもどのような家具の断片を有しているのかが分かり、また冒頭の謝辞でM. Eaton-Kraussの名が挙げられていることから、家具研究の最先端の状況がこの論考にはかなりの程度反映されていると考えられるわけです。
巻末には参考文献が400タイトル以上、挙げられています。

カイロ・エジプト博物館の各々の家具の図面がまったく掲載されていない点は惜しまれるところ。けれども家具が登場する壁画を集成している章は有用です。

家具に関する専門用語を述べた章では、情報が錯綜していた語、isbt（isbwt）がやはり大きく取り上げられています。この語に関しては以前、Janssen 2009で触れました。Eaton-Kraussが議論に関わっていますから当然、話が詳しくなっています。もともと高貴な者だけが使うことが許された折り畳み椅子についてはWanscher 1980が基本文献となりますけれど、El Gabryの本でも「男が座るものなのだ」と明言されている（p. 82）のが面白い。

結論で言われている

"I hope that my study of the collections in the Cairo Museum will encourage other scholars to publish all the objects, and especially the fragments preserved in other museums. Our picture is still incomplete and we only know about the famous chairs and stools that are usually discussed in entries about furniture in general. (...) Complete pieces are useful in iconography and symbolism, in the case of royal specimens, but for technical information, we need the fragments."

という部分は、家具研究家が共通して抱えている問題認識だと言えそうです。
