筆者は家具やインテリアを紹介する一般雑誌の編集を勤めた人。

前近代の､機械の普及による手作業の駆逐と、これに抗う過去への憧憬、まったく新しい形態を生み出した近代の家具､並行して造られる様式を伴った家具の話などが、有名人たちを登場させながら語られていきます。

"Social life, clothing fashion, and many other aspects of everyday life are revealed in the decorative arts of any period of history, particularly in the furniture." (p. 14)

"He [=Italian cultural historian Mario Praz] goes on to suggest that "even more than painting or sculpture, perhaps even more than architecture itself, furniture reveals the spirit of an age." (p. 17)

といった表現の仕方が興味深く思われます。
ここでは家具というものの特殊なあり方が言いあらわされようとしており、文化に対する皮膚感覚のようなものが、とても大切に考えられていることが良く理解できます。
建築史と室内装飾史との分岐点であるのかもしれません。ベーカーの一生と､彼の思いを支えた時代背景がつぶさに描かれていて貴重。
