北欧は木を使う家具の伝統が長いところですから、古代の木製家具に目を向ける家具デザイナーたちが時折、登場します。オーレ・ワンシャーやハンス・ウェグナーなどが代表的。
この本も、古代エジプトの家具を網羅する学術書ではないことを、あらかじめ序文で断っています。狙われているのは、デザイナーたちに最初の家具の魅力を知ってもらうこと。そしてそれがじわじわと、良い家具が作られるような流れに影響していくこと。

"This work is the product of a furniture designer's interest and studies, and sets out in concise form some of the features of the earliest furniture-cultures which have come to play a decisive role in inspiring our own culture and which will also in future - as part of a conscious or unconscious process - influence modern furniture design." (p. 7)

造本が凝っているのは、デザイナーに手に取ってもらいたいからだと思われます。ほとんど真っ黒な装丁に金字を入れ、表紙の最下部に赤帯を入れています。また、見返しが真っ赤なキャンソン紙。本文では朱と黒の文字を使い分けます。

精巧な模型を作ったのは著者。目次で知られる通り、さまざまな家具が紹介されています。工具にも触れており、仕口の立体的な図化もなされています。家具と本との両方が楽しめる本。
