古代エジプトの庭園に関する本が久しぶりにまた出たかと思ったら､思わぬ展開。
庭園史において古代エジプトや西アジアの庭園は最初に記述され、専門書も出ています。この本はしかし､別の趣向を求めている模様。

エジプトの庭園が大急ぎで論述されています。
各時代の壁画、あるいは中王国時代のメケトラーの木製模型などが文中で扱われますけれども、図版が紹介される例は少数。テル・エル＝ダバアにおける発掘調査の成果は無視。アマルナにもおざなりに言及しますけれども､アマルナ型住居における庭園については語りません。
エジプト以降の古代･中世の庭園を扱っていることが分かりますが､中途半端で､例えばミノアの庭園などには触れられていません。クノッソス宮殿における庭園についてはShaw夫妻のどちらかが論考を発表していたはず。
最後の第6章の題を見て､ようやく目的が分かります。

"In order to produce an ancient Egyptian garden in the UK it is important to consider the possible problems that are to be overcome in order for it to succeed. The climate of the British Isles is temperate and fairly cool compared with the sub-tropical conditions experienced in Egypt."

つまり、イギリスでエジプト風庭園を造りたい人に向けての簡単な手引き書で、気候を無視したやり方を教える本。
謝辞にはRosalie Davidの名が最初に挙げられています。
