古代の家具を調べようとするならば、本書は要諦。

20人以上ほどの専門家が集った国際会議の記録で、エジプト・西アジアにおける家具研究がものすごい勢いで並び、類書がまったくありません。
考古学を一般向けに紹介するMinerva誌であったか、この会議の模様が短く報告されているはずです。研究者同士がすぐに打ち解けて、活発な研究発表がおこなわれたらしい。この世界に携わる人はごく少数ですから、当然のこと。

世界中に散らばっていて、それまで長年、孤立しながら研究を続けていた者たちが、ほとんど初めて大規模に集まった会議で、おそらくは恋人とようやく遭遇したような、熱い雰囲気であったと想像されます。
西アジア・エジプトにおける古代家具の研究は、世界でこれぐらいしか人数がいないと言うことです。この事情は、今でも大きく変わっていないと思われます。
400ページを超える、20世紀の末に出版された記念すべき書。古代の木工の詳細に関する貴重な情報が掲載されています。

長々と目次を掲げたのは、内容を逐一示すためです。題名において一部、特殊記号を省略。

網羅されている時代と地域に、特に御注目ください。
ただ圧倒されるばかりです。15年以上経っていますが、これに比肩すべき会合は一切開催されていないはず。

会議の最後にまとめとしての"Concluding remarks"をしゃべる役目となったMooreyは、惜しくも亡くなりましたが、適任。語りの冒頭では当該分野の先蹤者としてH. BakerとO. Wanscherの2名の家具職人を挙げ、讃えています。
このMooreyという人は、古代西アジア研究の分野できわめて高名な人。

しっかりとした造本で、265-301ページに纏められた長大な参考文献リストはきわめて重要。これだけ古代の家具に関する著作を集めたリストは、現在でも稀有です。
