欧米においてフリーメーソンが美術や建築に与えた大きな影響を辿った珍しい本。2002年のサー・バニスター・フレッチャー賞を受賞するなど評価が高い本格的な論考。モーツァルトの「魔笛」なども扱われます。

フリーメーソンに関する怪しげな本が非常に多い中､込み入った話を30年以上かけて調べて著された書で、序文には

"The Select Bibliography and Notes give an indication of what is only the tip of an enormous iceberg of Masonic and related publications, and there must be many ideas and images I have absorbed over some thirty years of considering the subject which have simply become part of my understanding, and which I can no longer recall as being anything other than part of the total picture I have formed." (p. 7)

と記されており､この状況はエジプト学と似ていないこともない。フリーメーソンによって古代エジプトのモティーフが頻繁に援用されたことは後半で扱われます。
この建築史家はエジプト学を斜に構えて見据えることを通し､いくつかの論考も書いています。
